Deadpool 2: Pool Harder

May 26, 2018

Deadpool 2 was not what I expected. I went in expecting more wacky hijinks like the first film, but this time with X-Force in tow, but that’s not what this film does. While its predecessor poked endless fun at superhero movies and all their clichés, Deadpool 2 deconstructs them entirely while still having fun with it. It gleefully mocks superhero movies, comic book tropes, and even specific 90s trends that Deadpool himself is a creation of. I was initially skeptical of Josh Brolin being cast as Cable since he was already playing Thanos, and I was personally hoping for Stephen Lang. However, I was won over pretty quickly with Brolin’s performance. Having him as the main antagonist actually works better than the previous film’s villain Ajax (I know you don’t remember that’s what his name was), because it gives Deadpool someone to play off. They clash several times throughout the movie, whereas Deadpool really only fights Ajax at the climax of the first film. Similar to Avengers: Infinity War, there’s honestly not a whole lot more I can say without spoiling anything, particularly the sub-plot with X-Force, which went in a direction I did not expect. Out of all the new characters, the one I enjoyed the most was Zazie Beetz as Domino. It turns out luck is an EXTREMELY cinematic power. Deadpool 2 is an extremely fun movie that’s honestly just as good as the first one. It manages to avoid the plot most sequels fall into of just redoing the first movie. Be warned however, this is a hard R movie, and is not remotely appropriate for either kids or people with tame sensibilities. I don’t mean that as an insult, but the film is nowhere close to being politically correct, and nothing and no one is sacred in this movie. Summary, if you loved the first one, you’ll love it. If you thought the first one was crass and immature, you won’t like it. Especially when it’s immaturity is half the fun.

I do apologize for the short length of this week’s post, but as I said, I don’t want to spoil it for others. Also, a friend of mine wrote a much better review and seeing as I agreed with every point he made, I didn’t want to seem like I was copying him. Next week will be bigger since we’ll be discussing E3. Hope to see you guys next week!
